Philip's probably unaware that the term "gay", as pertains to homosexuals, wasn't that widely used in the 1930's... but there's a good chance that "marriage of convenience" was.

And yes, sad but true... a homosexual could be busted for sodomy, which was still a felony back in 1933. Illinois would be the first state to repeal their anti-sodomy laws, but not until 1961.
