The Butt-Head Effect

The Butt-Head Effect

In case you were curious, the actual title of the essay was: "Does the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?" (And while Edward Lorenz wrote the essay, Philip Merilees came up with the title.)

Comic transcript

TRANSCRIPTION COURTESY OF JOSEPH HOUK - (MG, walking into CW's backyard as she is using her Apple iPad) "Can I borrow the time machine for a minute?" (CW) "Um… For what?" (MG, holding a net with something moving in the bottom) "I just caught a butterfly and I want to release it into the past!" (CW) "Dare I ask why?" (MG) "I just wanted to test that theory… you know, Lorenz, 'Butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil' and all that." (CW, handing him the time machine) "Okay. I sure hope you know what the hell you're doing."(MG) "It's a pretty simple operation, so yeah! [opening the time machine] Let's see here. 500 years ago would be a good starting point. [1512, MG steps through the time portal and lets the butterfly go] Here goes! FLY FREE, LITTLE CREATURE! [steps back into 2012] Now check your 'i-Pad'. Any big changes in history?" (CW) "No, I'm not seeing anything drastically different so far…" [Oh, wait… is that a COMMODORE logo on the back of her tablet PC?]
